Andrew Emms was made a Life Member of Reed Cricket Club during the Sixty-second Annual General Meeting last Thursday. Andrew has worked on a variety of projects at the Club in his time as it has grown from rural village side to one of the finest clubs in Hertfordshire. He continues to volunteer and carry-out many of the manual labouring jobs that need doing as well as organising annual charity luncheons that have raised money for many worthy causes. In his early days he was particularly involved in setting-up the Colts’ structure from which the Club has benefitted with a constant supply of young players coming through to the senior teams. After many years as Committee member and Club Chairman, Andrew remains the figurehead of the Club as its President since 2012. He is a generous socialiser and a very loyal member of the Club and deserves this recognition. He now joins a very select band of Life Members comprising Clive Collins, Rosemary Collins, Keith Collins and Roger Bowcock. Peter G. Baker. Honorary Secretary, Reed CC 2nd December 2018.

PGB ************************************************************************* Friday 19th October, 12.30pm at the Queen’s Building, Emmanuel College: An Hour with Mike Brearley. Calling all cricket fans! Legendary England captain Mike Brearley is returning to Cambridge - and Heffers invites you to spend an hour in his company. Mike Brearley OBE was educated at Cambridge, reading Classics and Moral Sciences. He captained England from 1977 to 1980 and was recalled to the captaincy in 1981 for the Ashes Home series - one of their most famous victories. Since retiring from cricket he trained as a psychoanalyst, and is a lecturer on leadership and motivation. He is the author of the best-selling The Art of Captaincy, and has written on cricket and the psychology of sport for the Observer and The Times. In his new collection of essays, On Cricket, Brearley has gone through pieces he has written over the past four decades, elaborating on many of them, cutting or adding, according to his second thoughts presenting to the reader something that is more holistic, more synoptic, from distance and old age. Tickets for the event are priced at £8 in advance or £10 on the door and can be purchased through mikebrearley.eventbrite.co.uk, by calling 01223 463200 or in person at Heffers bookshop.
The time has come for the Cups, Tankards and Trophies to be dusted-off and polished ready to be presented to the 2018 season award winners. Will you be one? Celebrate those personal performances with your club mates. The bar will be open all evening for a good knees up. Think of all those match-changing moments that you should have bought a jug for - but did not / forgot to / hadn't any money / don't believe in it / left before getting collared / too young to buy alcohol, (delete as appropriate). Tons, fifties, 5-fors, multi-catches, stumpings or run-outs in an innings, man-of-the-match awards. Everyone will be welcome and the season hasn't even ended yet!
The 2018 President's Day will be on Sunday 12th August. Teams will play short-side matches throughout the day with a Final to decide the Winners. All Club players will be welcome to participate. Gather at 1100hrs. Play commences at 1200hrs.
Friday 3rd August. 7:00 p.m. for a prompt 8:00 p.m. start. And your starter for 10. Q: How many Quizzes is Reed CC holding in 2018? A: Two. Yes, two. The first was in June with veteran Quizmaster Matt Bowles asking the questions. Now, a new look and a new variety of teasers with Sam Greaves taking the chair. Will last time’s winning team, “Not All Legless”, be going for the double? Not far behind, Super Best Friends came second equal with We don’t know - (yes, we do know; the team’s name was We Don’t Know)! Book early - see phone numbers for Sam and Tom.
Our accommodating Chairman, Stuart Smith, has thoughtfully brought forward the start time to 1100hrs so that players, families, friends and supporters would be able to watch the Men's Tennis Final at Wimbledon on TV during the afternoon, and incidentally the Final of the (men's???) Soccer World Cup too!
