Reed CC 3rd XI continued their strong run of form on Saturday with a comprehensive 182-run victory over Southgate Adelaide CC at Freman College, collecting a valuable 30 points and strengthening their position near the top of the table.

On a hot and humid afternoon, with dark clouds overhead and conditions that appeared far more favourable for bowlers than batters, Reed won the toss and elected to bat first. It proved to be the right decision.

Openers Chris Cooper and Ethan Fox laid the perfect platform with an outstanding opening partnership of 192. In conditions where batting was far from straightforward, both players showed patience and discipline early on before capitalising on anything loose.

Cooper made 89 from 84 balls before becoming the first wicket to fall, while Fox continued to anchor the innings superbly. He eventually made a magnificent 98 from 92 balls, bringing up his maiden adult fifty before going on to produce a superb innings. Batting with maturity and composure throughout, he was desperately unfortunate to fall just two runs short of a maiden century.

With such a strong foundation in place, the rest of the batting order were able to play with freedom. Matt Jackson (13), Ollie Kimsey (11), Harry Sapsed (6) and Simon Jackson (6 not out) all made useful contributions as Reed finished on an imposing 267-6 from their 40 overs.

The innings also provided opportunities for several younger players, including debutants Harry Sapsed and Abigail Jackson, both making their first appearances for the 3rd XI.

If the batting performance laid the foundation for victory, the bowling and fielding display that followed completed one of Reed's most complete performances of the season.

From the outset, Reed's bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Tight lines, disciplined bowling and excellent support in the field meant Southgate Adelaide never found any momentum. Wickets fell regularly throughout the innings and, despite some resistance from M D'Costa, who finished unbeaten on 46, the visitors were eventually dismissed for just 85.

The afternoon belonged to Abigail Jackson, who enjoyed a dream debut. Bowling with confidence, control and maturity beyond her years, she claimed outstanding figures of 4-15 and played a major role in dismantling the Southgate Adelaide batting line-up. It was a hugely impressive first appearance and one that suggests she will be a major asset for Reed moving forward.

Fellow debutant Harry Sapsed also enjoyed a memorable afternoon and looked completely at home in senior cricket, contributing positively to an excellent team performance.

The rest of the bowling attack backed up brilliantly. Jim Sapsed claimed two wickets, while Ollie Kimsey and Andy Kimsey each picked up a wicket. Stanley Johnson marked his return with a wicket of his own, and Matt Jackson's excellent spell of 5 overs, 2 maidens and just 11 runs perfectly summed up the pressure Reed applied throughout the innings.

The fielding matched the quality of the bowling. Energy levels remained high throughout the afternoon and every player contributed. Special mention must go to Bunker, whose enthusiasm and commitment set the standard for everyone around him. Back in the 3rd XI this week, he threw himself around the field all afternoon, putting his body on the line and showing players half his age exactly what commitment and team spirit look like. An absolute club legend and a brilliant example to the whole side.

Perhaps most pleasing of all was the collective nature of the performance. Everyone contributed, youngsters were given opportunities, standards remained high throughout, and the attitude from first ball to last was outstanding.

The victory leaves Reed sitting third in the table and right back in contention as the season begins to enter its second half.

Attention now turns to another huge fixture next weekend against Arkley. Reed will be looking to build on this momentum, continue their strong run of form and strengthen their promotion challenge with another positive result.
