Result: Reed CC won by 7 wickets

Reed CC 1st XI opened their 2025 National Village Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, producing a clinical all-round performance to secure a 7-wicket win away at Langleybury CC on a warm Sunday afternoon.

After being asked to bowl first, Reed responded with a controlled and disciplined performance in the field, restricting the hosts to 187 all out from their allotted 40 overs. The chase was never in doubt, thanks to a composed platform from the openers and a match-winning, unbeaten half-century from Robert Lankester, who powered Reed home with over 14 overs to spare.

? Langleybury’s Innings: Reid Steadies, Archer Finishes
Having won the toss and choosing to bat first on home soil, Langleybury got off to a nervy start, losing Dan Roberts for a 10-ball duck, clean bowled by Matt Giblin. However, the innings gained momentum through Finley Reid, who played fluently and with confidence, compiling a well-made 49 off 48 balls, including 8 boundaries.

Reid combined with Ross Channer (17) for a valuable 50-run stand for the third wicket in just 44 balls, and later with Andy Hopping (32) to guide Langleybury past 100 in the 21st over. But just as they appeared to be setting up a big finish, Reed’s bowlers wrestled control back.

The introduction of William Archer turned the tide dramatically. His accurate and aggressive spell yielded 3 wickets for just 17 runs in 5 overs, breaking the back of the lower order. He was ably supported by Lee Johnson (2-40) and Matt Giblin (2-25), while William Heslam picked up 2 wickets despite a slightly expensive return.

Langleybury moved to 174/7 in the 38th over, but a quick collapse saw the last 3 wickets fall for just 13 runs, leaving them all out for 187 in 40 overs — a competitive but far from imposing total on a good surface.

? Reed’s Chase: Confident, Composed, and Commanding
Reed’s reply was positive and well-structured from the outset. Openers Michael Robertson and Kallum Ward got the innings off to a flyer, adding 56 for the first wicket inside 8 overs. Robertson was particularly fluent, striking 7 boundaries in his 37 off 30 balls before being bowled by Neel Madan. Ward contributed a steady 22 before falling caught off Steve Carter.

At 89/2, the match was still open — but William Heslam and Robert Lankester had other ideas. Their partnership combined urgency with control, taking the game away from Langleybury with a 75-run stand for the third wicket in just 8.2 overs.

Heslam was unfortunate to be run out for a composed 45 from 45 balls, but by then the damage was done. Lankester pressed on, bringing up his fifty in just 37 balls, peppered with 10 fours and 3 sixes. His timing and placement were superb, and he finished unbeaten on 65 off 40 balls*, guiding Reed to a convincing victory at 190/3 in 25.2 overs.

Langleybury’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs, with Rajkumar (0–51 from 7) and Madan (1–41) the most expensive. Carter claimed one wicket, but Reed’s aggressive intent meant the hosts never truly threatened to turn the match.
