After Skipper Rob Lankester had inserted Chorleywood, his decision was immediately vindicated as the hosts stumbled to 32-5. Jack Caine’s slick run out and sharp catch accounted for two victims, two more catches snaffled by Sean Tidey and Matt Sampson completed the debacle. The beneficiaries were Matt Giblin (3-37), which also included flattening the stumps of Chorleywood captain Tom Smithson, and Jack Tidey(9.1-3-17-1) who worryingly had to pull up with a sore calf.
Manjula Sandanayake’s aggressive 27 was abruptly halted by the introduction of William Heslam, brilliantly caught down the leg side by the diving keeper Tidey. Heslam also bowled his successor leaving Chorleywood tottering once more at 69-7. The innings was rescued however by a fine knock from Luke Sutcliffe (36) in a half century partnership with Gene Tipping (17) who had clung on barnacle like for 88 balls. Will Archer’s spin tricked Sutcliffe into slicing a catch to Heslam, who promptly clean bowled two more victims finishing with 9-2-19-4 leaving the home side 128 all out.
In reply, Phil Frenay (10) and Stuart Smith took the sting out of the opening attack, the latter then playing second fiddle to Heslam who flayed 8 boundaries in his first 10 scoring strokes. After putting together a fifty partnership, Smith was well caught behind for 17 – his notable stroke hitting the tree in the outfield for 4 runs. His departure only brought in Lankester to face the tireless Sutcliffe (15-5-60-1) bowling throughout the innings. Lankester greeted him with two towering straight sixes, one right over the A405 and the other onto a luckless car. The one blemish in an otherwise brilliant all-round performance was skying a catch to wide mid on after completing his half century.
Reed won by 7 wickets gaining 30 valuable points in a very quick match.
