Reed Power Into Next Round After Tidey Blitz Sinks Redbourn

Reed Power Into Next Round After Tidey Blitz Sinks Redbourn

William Heslam26 May - 15:05

Disciplined bowling laid the platform before Sean Tidey’s explosive half-century fired Reed CC to a five-wicket National Village Cup victory over Redbourn.

Reed CC overcame sweltering conditions and a lightning-fast outfield to secure a superb five-wicket victory over Redbourn CC in the National Village Cup at Redbourn Common on Sunday.

On a scorching 31-degree afternoon, with one exceptionally short boundary offering constant temptation to the batters, conditions heavily favoured scoring. Despite that, Reed’s bowlers delivered a disciplined and controlled performance to restrict Redbourn to 219-7 from their 40 overs. The relentless heat made for a draining afternoon in the field, but Reed maintained their intensity throughout.

Redbourn were led by Ethan Bury, who struck an entertaining 92 from 87 balls, taking full advantage of the short side of the ground with eight fours and three sixes. Frederick Johnson added 44 at the top of the order as the hosts looked set for an even bigger total. However, Reed consistently pulled things back whenever momentum threatened to swing away from them.

Matt Giblin was outstanding in the middle overs, claiming 4-54 and breaking several dangerous partnerships just as Redbourn threatened to accelerate. Ollie Johnson chipped in with two wickets, while Julien Fynn provided an important early breakthrough. Crucially, Reed’s bowlers avoided leaking easy boundaries despite the small dimensions and batting-friendly conditions, forcing Redbourn to work hard for their runs.

In reply, Reed approached the chase positively but lost Kallum Ward and captain Robert Lankester inside the opening 10 overs. William Heslam then produced a composed and measured innings, anchoring the chase superbly with an unbeaten 73 from 91 balls, striking nine boundaries while expertly rotating the strike in the oppressive heat.

After the platform had been set, wicketkeeper Sean Tidey turned the game decisively in Reed’s favour with a sensational counterattack. Tidey blasted 60 from just 38 balls, launching seven sixes and two fours in a breathtaking innings that took full advantage of the short boundary. His half-century came from only 29 deliveries and completely shifted the momentum of the contest.

Although Bertie Roe picked up three wickets for Redbourn, Reed’s aggressive approach proved too powerful. Heslam calmly guided the visitors home as Reed reached 220-5 in just 33.5 overs, sealing an impressive victory and progression to the next round.

Given the heat, the tiny boundary on one side, and the batting-friendly nature of the surface, Reed’s disciplined bowling effort arguably laid the foundations for the win before the batters completed the job in style.

The comprehensive win sends Reed through to the Hertfordshire area final at home to Knebworth park. This will be played at The Green on Sunday 7th June.
