Tidey stars again as Reed reach National Village Cup last 32

William Heslam8 Jun - 10:23

Reed booked their place in the last 32 of the National Village Cup with a superb 55-run victory over Knebworth Park in the Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Area Final on Sunday.

With a place in the national stages at stake, Reed produced a performance that showcased both resilience and quality. After building a strong position with the bat before losing momentum late in the innings, the home side responded with an outstanding bowling display, spearheaded by another match-winning spell from Jack Tidey.

Having lost the toss and been asked to bat, Reed made a positive start. Kallum Ward led the way with a fluent 39, setting the tone at the top of the order, while Robert Lankester added an important 35 as Reed steadily built a platform. With William Heslam contributing 14 and Charlie Walters 12, the innings was progressing well and the hosts looked firmly in control.

At 129-4, Reed appeared set for a total comfortably in excess of 180. However, Knebworth fought back impressively, striking regularly through the middle and lower order. A flurry of wickets halted Reed's momentum and the innings closed on 162 all out in just 34.5 overs.

While the score represented a competitive total, there was a feeling that Reed had left runs out in the middle. Having laid such a solid foundation, they would have been disappointed not to bat out their overs and push the score beyond 180.

Any concerns proved short-lived.

Reed's bowlers immediately put Knebworth under pressure, but it was Jack Tidey who seized control of the contest. Exploiting the conditions expertly and bowling with relentless accuracy, he ripped through the visitors' batting line-up.

Adam Sergeant and Mark Woods were removed early before Tidey added the key wickets of Kobie Richmond and Dave Roberts as Knebworth slipped further behind the game. When Archie Stephens threatened to mount a recovery, Tidey returned to remove him and then Jack Randall, extinguishing any hopes of a comeback.

His final figures of 6 for 24 from eight overs were a fitting reward for a spell of exceptional quality and ensured Knebworth never got close to Reed's target.

Tom Greaves provided excellent support with three wickets of his own, while the rest of the attack maintained the pressure throughout. Backed by energetic fielding and sharp catching, Reed steadily tightened their grip on the contest before eventually dismissing Knebworth for 107 in 26 overs.

The final margin of victory perhaps disguised how finely balanced the game felt when Reed left the field after being bowled out. Having looked set for a much larger total, there was understandable frustration at not making full use of a promising position.

Thanks to Tidey's heroics, however, those concerns quickly disappeared.

The seamer's outstanding six-wicket haul continued a remarkable National Village Cup campaign. Earlier in the competition he had produced astonishing figures of 7 for 12 against St Margaretsbury, and he once again delivered when the stakes were highest. Across those two knockout victories, Tidey has claimed 13 wickets for just 36 runs, playing a pivotal role in Reed's progress through the competition.

Victory secures the Hertfordshire & Bedfordshire Area title and sends Reed into the national rounds of the Village Cup with confidence. If this year's run goes deep into the competition, this area final may well be remembered as the day Jack Tidey produced another spell for the ages and fired Reed into the last 32.
