Reed 3rd XI made a superb start to the new league campaign on Saturday with a dominant 143-run victory over North Mymms 3rd XI in glorious sunshine at Freman College.
After a good pre-season, Reed carried that momentum into the first league game, delivering an excellent all-round performance to secure maximum points and get the season off to the perfect start.
Batting first, Reed posted an imposing 228-6 from their 40 overs, with Simon Jackson producing a superb unbeaten 96. Jackson struck 16 boundaries in a classy innings and formed the backbone of the Reed score, just running out of balls in the innings for a deserved century.
Jackon was well supported by Ethan Fox, whose fluent 35 from 38 deliveries helped build momentum, while Andy Kimsey added an important 26 and Johno Fry chipped in with an unbeaten 21 as Reed finished strongly.
The large total immediately put North Mymms under pressure in the chase, forcing them to take risks from the outset, and Reed’s bowlers capitalised brilliantly.
Ollie Kimsey set the tone early, producing an outstanding spell of 4-7 from five overs, including three maidens. At the other end, Matthew Jackson supported superbly as the opening bowling pair picked up early wickets, with Matthew claiming two important wickets himself.
Jonathan Fry and Zak Rouse both impressed first change, with Jonathan Fry picking up 3-25 as Reed maintained pressure throughout the innings.
All round, the fielding performance was excellent, with concentration and team energy high throughout. Pick of the catches went to Ethan Fox, who had little time to think as a firmly struck cut shot was confidently held at point, while Aaron Nash was excellent behoind the stumps. Johno wrapped up the victory with the match-winning catch as North Mymms were dismissed for 85.
A fantastic team performance all round sees Reed take 30 points from the opening fixture, with attention now turning to next week’s trip to Potton, as the side look to continue their strong start to the season.
