After a narrow defeat last weekend had brought an end to an impressive unbeaten start to the season, Reed responded exactly as they would have hoped with an outstanding all-round team performance in difficult, hot conditions.
Having lost the toss and been asked to field, Reed immediately set the tone with a disciplined display of bowling and fielding. Every player contributed, the energy in the field remained high throughout, and chances were taken whenever they came.
The opening pair of Oliver Kimsey and Matthew Jackson put Botany Bay under pressure from the outset. Kimsey claimed the first breakthrough, while Jackson produced an excellent spell of 3-11 from his six overs to leave the home side struggling for momentum.
A particular mention must go to Stanley Johnson, who earned a recall to the side after a series of strong performances for the 4th XI. Johnson justified his selection with an outstanding spell of 4 overs, 2 maidens, 4 runs and 1 wicket, while also taking a catch. His accuracy and control helped maintain relentless pressure on the Botany Bay batting line-up.
The middle overs saw no let-up. Matt Yates delivered a superb return of 2-3 from five overs, including three maidens, while Zak Rouse wrapped up the innings with 2-3 from 2.2 overs. David Shagam also bowled tightly, conceding just 12 runs from four overs.
The reward for Reed's discipline was a remarkable bowling performance that saw Botany Bay dismissed for just 56 in 25.2 overs. Just as pleasing as the bowling figures was the standard of fielding, with catches held and concentration levels maintained throughout the innings.
Chasing a modest target can sometimes present its own challenges, but Reed approached the task professionally. Although Richard Johnson fell early, Chris Cooper and David Shagam quickly settled any nerves.
The pair played positively and sensibly, sharing an unbeaten partnership that carried Reed comfortably to victory. Cooper finished 29 not out, while Shagam ended unbeaten on 24 as Reed reached 58-1 with plenty of overs to spare.
It was a thoroughly deserved victory built on excellent attitude, sharp fielding, disciplined bowling and sensible batting. Most importantly, it delivered a maximum 30-point return and keeps Reed firmly in the promotion conversation after four league matches.
A superb team effort and an excellent response to last week's disappointment.
