Reed 3rd XI produced one of their best performances of the season on Saturday, defeating promotion rivals Arkley by 76 runs at Freman College to secure a hugely important victory in the context of the season and collect another valuable 30 points in their promotion push.
Having lost the toss and been asked to bat first, Reed found themselves under early pressure against a strong Arkley bowling attack. Captain Chris Cooper (7) and Paul Garrott (5) both fell cheaply, leaving Reed in early trouble.
Ethan Fox then played a positive hand of 18 to help steady the innings alongside Simon Jackson before falling with the score on 62-3.
From that point, the game was transformed by a magnificent innings from Jackson. Displaying equal measures of patience, composure and attacking intent, he anchored the innings superbly, finishing unbeaten on 124 from just 93 balls, including 16 fours and three sixes. The innings moves Jackson to the top of the division's batting charts with 328 runs for the season.
Crucially, Jackson was supported throughout his innings by a succession of excellent partnerships. Andy Kimsey provided a vital contribution of 28 during a stand of exactly 100 runs for the fourth wicket, helping Reed move from 62-3 to 162-4. Aaron Nash then remained unbeaten on 17 to help guide Reed to an imposing 234-4 from their 40 overs.
Arkley came out to bat confident they could chase down the target, but their hopes were immediately dented by an inspired opening spell from Oliver Kimsey. Kimsey removed both openers, John Rogan and Wesley Crellin, to leave the visitors under early pressure and hand Reed the ideal start. Kimsey, alongside fellow young opening bowler Matthew Jackson, have both enjoyed excellent seasons so far and now feature in the division's top ten wicket-takers.
Matthew Jackson then struck to remove Arkley captain James Franklin, courtesy of a very good catch by Aaron Nash, before Abigail Jackson claimed the extremely dangerous Sajid Masood for a quickfire 27. The dismissal itself had an element of good fortune about it, with wicketkeeper Simon Jackson completing a stumping off a rebound from his pads, but it was a deserved wicket for Abigail, who has made a real impact since joining the side last week. Following a four-wicket haul on debut, she once again contributed with the ball and provided a constant positive voice in the field throughout the afternoon.
Arkley opener Nick Anson produced a determined innings of 62 and, alongside contributions from elsewhere in the middle order, briefly threatened to swing the momentum back towards the visitors. However, captain Chris Cooper produced a decisive spell, claiming figures of 5-29 from six overs, and was well supported by Jonathan Fry, who finished with 1-17, as Reed eventually closed out the match and dismissed Arkley for 158 in 27 overs.
The victory represented a complete team performance, with every player contributing with bat, ball or in the field. It was also a great team day off the pitch, with thanks to Dan Fox for scoring, Johnno for umpiring, and Vicky and Olivia for helping provide a magnificent tea.
After the game, captain Chris Cooper praised the collective effort:
"It was a brilliant team performance. Everybody contributed, whether with the bat, ball or in the field, and that's exactly what you need in big games against good sides. Simon's innings was outstanding, but there were important contributions throughout the side that made the difference. It's a massive 30 points and one that could prove really important for us by the end of the season."
After four consecutive home fixtures, Reed 3rd XI return to the road next weekend as they travel to Old Minchendians, looking to maintain their excellent form and continue their promotion push. At the halfway point of the season, just 12 points separate the top three sides, leaving the promotion race finely poised heading into the second half of the campaign.
