Reed CC 4th XI began their league campaign in perfect fashion with a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Old Elizabethans CC at Freman College. In what was the first ever league fixture for the newly formed 4th XI, the side showcased exactly what the team is all about — a blend of experienced club players, new faces and exciting young talent all pulling together.
After losing the toss and being asked to field, Reed produced an outstanding display with the ball. The visitors were restricted to 103 all out from 32 overs thanks to disciplined bowling and sharp fielding throughout.
The standout performance came from captain Simon England, who produced a remarkable spell of 6 for 2 from six overs, including a hattrick and four maidens. England ripped through the middle and lower order with relentless accuracy, turning the game decisively in Reed’s favour. He was well supported by the rest of the attack, with Stanley Johnson (1-18), Abigail Jackson (1-18), Liam Nash (1-8) and Zak Rouse (1-35) picking up a wicket each. Reed’s fielding standards remained high throughout and ensured pressure was maintained from start to finish.
Chasing 104, Reed made a steady start despite losing an early wicket. Scott Nash top scored with an aggressive 30, while Joshua England added a composed 25 to keep the scoreboard moving.
Although a cluster of wickets briefly gave the visitors hope, Reed remained calm in the chase. Lloyd Bowman anchored the innings with an unbeaten 5 from 31 balls before Simon England capped an excellent all-round afternoon by smashing 13 not out from just seven balls, including three boundaries, to see Reed home in the 26th over.
The win gives Reed’s new-look 4th XI an excellent start to life in league cricket and, more importantly, highlighted the positive spirit and togetherness already developing within the side.
